FuelOpt - RPM/Pitch Optimization 

We at Lean Marine want to share something with you: For the first time, a system that continuously adapts the propeller and engine operation to the actual environment and loading conditions is available.

The result: Proven and Demonstrable fuel savings.


A vessel equipped with a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) enjoys benefits in terms of maneuverability and more careful control of the engine load for a large operating range of the vessel.

However, the CPP solution is not without some noticable compromises.

As the vessel is operated at a point away from the initial design criteria - such points may be slow steaming or in ballast condition - the propeller typically loses a lot of its efficiency. Additionally the engine is likely operating at a point that is not its most optimum.

The Lean Marine FuelOpt™ system implements a patent pending control logic to make sure that the propeller RPM and Pitch is always set to get the most possible thrust out of the engine and propeller system. This means the same vessel speed for less power.

On the bridge, the crew sets the desired vessel speed and maximum allowed fuel consumption. The FuelOpt™ system takes over from there and starts continously optimizing the running parameters.

In the Engine Control Room (ECR) the crew gets detailed feedback and logs on the system parameters.

In today's business most vessels are running at speeds well below their design speed. In such conditions the potential savings are substantial as indicated by the sea trial of a FuelOpt™ system shown to the right.
