FuelOpt - RPM/Pitch Optimization 

For the first time, a system that continuously adapts the propeller and engine operation to the actual environment and loading conditions is available from Lean Marine.

The result: Proven and Demonstrable fuel savings.

A vessel equipped with a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) enjoys benefits in terms of maneuverability and more careful control of the engine load for a large operating range of the vessel.

However, the CPP solution is not without some noticable compromises.

As the vessel is operated at a point away from the initial design criteria - such points may be slow steaming or in ballast condition - the propeller typically loses a lot of its efficiency. Additionally the engine is likely operating at a point that is not its most optimum.

To put it short: Vessels are wasting energy. Let us tell you how to fix that.


The Lean Marine FuelOpt™ system implements a patent pending control logic to make sure that the propeller RPM and Pitch is always set to get the most possible thrust out of the engine and propeller system. This means the same vessel speed for less power.

On the bridge, the crew sets the desired vessel speed and maximum allowed fuel consumption. The FuelOpt™ system takes over from there and starts continously optimizing the running parameters.

In the Engine Control Room (ECR) the crew gets detailed feedback and logs on the system parameters.

FuelOpt - Optimized Propulsive Power 

Operating a vessel to always keep predictable and consistent vessel speed and fuel consumption can be a real challenge for the crew on the bridge. The Lean Marine FuelOpt™ system will improve the speed management and use of the vessel's propulsive power.

The result: Proven and Demonstrable fuel savings.

We're all governed by the laws of physics. For a vessel at sea an unescapable truth is that one knot overspeed matters more than one knot underspeed in terms of fuel consumption.

The speed volatility around a certain desired speed therefore needs to be reduced in order to get maximum possible fuel economy.

The Lean Marine FuelOpt™ system will provide the crew with an interface to set a requested speed and a maximum allowed fuel consumption. Based on those set values the system will carefully control the propulsive power to achieve stable and predictable vessel speed with reduced power peaks and fuel consumption as a result.

In addition, the ability to control the vessel speed directly and not having to rely on an assumption that a specific lever position corresponds to a certain speed will often result in a more accurate and more conservative speed setting for the required ETA or route planning. This "cruise control" behaviour will again result in improved fuel economy.
